We have known for some time about the benefits of HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.
Singapore currently recommends HPV vaccination for women, to prevent cervical cancer.
HPV vaccination is Medisave claimable for women 26 years old and younger.
HPV variants, HPV-6 and HPV-11, are also responsible for 90% of genital warts.
Infection with genital warts can be prevented by HPV vaccination.
More importantly, HPV infection can cause other precancerous lesions: 60% and 90% of all cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus and throat are linked to HPV infection.
The advantages of HPV vaccination for the prevention of these types of cancer has been accepted and is reflected in the current vaccination guidelines in the United States (US).
The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) 2016, recommends:
- Routine vaccination with:
-HPV 2, HPV 4 or HPV 9 for females aged 11 or 12 years
-HPV 4 for males aged 11 or 12 years
- Vaccination also is recommended for those who were not vaccinated previously and are:
-Females aged 13 – 26 years
-Males aged 13 – 21 years; males aged 22 – 26 years may be vaccinated
-Men who have sex with men and immunocompromised persons (including those with HIV infection) through age 26 years
