Dengue fever is spread through the bite of an infective Aedes mosquito. When a person is bitten by an infective mosquito, they may develop symptoms after an incubation period of 4 to 7 days (ranges from 3 to 14 days). However, up to 75% of dengue infections are asymptomatic (no symptoms). Dengue fever does not spread from person to person.
Symptoms include:
- Sudden onset of fever for 2-7 days
- Severe headache with pain behind the eyes
- Joint and muscle pain
- Skin rashes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Mild bleeding (e.g. nose or gum bleed, or easy bruising of the skin
In addition to laboratory testing, there is a rapid Dengue NS1 + Ab Combo test** available. This test and results can be completed in 20 minutes.

In order to prevent future re-infection, “Dengvaxia” vaccine is available.
Dengvaxia is indicated for the prevention of dengue disease caused by dengue virus serotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4 in individuals 12 through 45 years of age living in endemic areas.
The primary vaccination schedule consists of 3 injections of one reconstituted dose (0.5 mL) to be administered at 6-month intervals.
Dengvaxia should not be administered to individuals less than 12 years of age.
Vaccination is not recommended for individuals who have not been previously infected by dengue virus.
