Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer is the 10th most common cancer of women in Singapore.
 
The most recent Singapore National Cancer Registry (2017-2021) reported that Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in young women aged 30 to 40 years old in Singapore.
 
Studies show that almost all cases of cervical cancer are associated with HPV infection; HPV Type 16 and HPV Type 18 are associated with 70% of all cervical cancers. In Singapore, HPV Type 52 and HPV Type 58 have also been found to be significant contributors to cervical cancer, accounting for 15.4% of all cervical cancers.
The uptake for cervical cancer screening in Singapore was 48.2% in 2019, 45.2%  in 2020 and 41% in 2021. The uptake rates are well below the recommended minimum target of 70% uptake.
Early detection of pre-cancerous lesions and early cancer detection can greatly improve the outcome of patients with cervical cancer.

HPV test

Digene (Hybrid Capture 2 test)

• Test for HPV infection, which detects infection with HPV-16, HPV-18 and 13 high risk types of HPV
• Test may be performed together with a routine pap smear
